Obtaining a Marriage License
A marriage license may be obtained from any county in North Carolina that
is convenient to you. The ceremony can then be held anywhere in North Carolina.
The only requirement is that the license must be returned to the county where the
license was issued. If you plan to obtain your license in another North Carolina
county, contact them for their hours and requirements. Contact Information for Registers of Deeds in other Counties.
To obtain a marriage license in Forsyth County, applicants must apply in person
to the Register of Deeds. If over 18 years of age and one applicant is unable to
appear in person, the other party to the marriage must appear in person on behalf
of the applicant and submit a sworn and notarized affidavit (as well as proof of
age and social security number for both parties.) You may print an Affidavit in Lieu of
Personal Appearance Form to use for this purpose.
