Community Care
The Community Care Program was implemented by the Forsyth County Animal Control
Department in 2004 to provide for additional adoption, rescue & foster care resources
for the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Currently over 40 animal welfare groups participate
in the Community Care Program. The success of this program is due largely to the
efforts of our partner organizations and the sustained relationship of the department
with these groups.
Through this program the community itself becomes an extension of the animal shelter.
Annually over 240 animals are cared for and eventually placed in new homes.
The objective of the Community Care Program is threefold:
- To increase the County’s animal adoptions through provision of additional opportunities
to promote and display adoptable animals away from the shelter, as well as provide
for a longer time within the program;
- To provide for additional adoption opportunities through transfer of animals to
the adoption/placement programs of private organizations;
- To provide for additional off-site caretakers for animals that temporarily would
not qualify for the adoption program due to health, age, behavior or unresolved
custodial rights issues.
The department reserves the right to select all animals for adoption, including
specific breeds. An organization wishing to participate in the adoption program
must submit a CCP application to the department of animal control. Once an application
is approved animals may be released to the custody of the organization. The adoption
policies and procedures of the applicant organization must be compatible with the
adoption policies utilized by the department of animal control. Animals are not
released to an organization that has not been approved by the department.
Criteria to participate in the Community Care Program include, but are not limited
to, a completed CCP application containing:
- Proof that the CCP applicant is a recognized, and duly incorporated, not for profit
organization, established to advance animal welfare;
- Proof of membership and/or affiliation with a recognized not for profit organization
if the group is a chapter or local representative of a national organization;
- Copies of the applicant organization’s adoption policy, requirements and guidelines;
- Copies of the applicant organization’s adoption application and contract;
- Identification of a primary representative.
