No.  You must have a valid N.C. Drivers License or State I.D.

A

Yes, if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and with proper photo identification.

Yes.  The division will tell you when to arrive and how many people it can accommodate during each fingerprinting session.

A

Go to the Clerk of Courts Office on the 2nd floor of the Hall of Justice located at 201 North Main Street in downtown Winston-Salem.

Money can only be sent in the form of a money order made payable to the inmate.  The money order must be mailed to:

Does the gun permit division accept checks or credit/debit cards?

A

No.  Only cash is accepted, and if possible the correct amount is appreciated.

How long is my Firearms Safety Certificate good for?

A

Currently there is no expiration date on the certificate per the SBI.

Do I get to keep my original Firearms Safety Certificate?

A

No.  The original is submitted with your application, but the division will make you a copy for your records.

When is it time for me to renew my carry concealed weapon permit?  Do I have to provide another Firearms Safety Certificate?

A

If you reapply a minimum of 30 days prior to the expiration date of your permit, the Sheriff will waive a new Firearms Safety Certificate.  Failure to reapply on time will result in the processing of a new permit.

Will the Sheriff's Office notify my when it is time to renew my CCW permit?

A

The Sheriff's Office will send you a courtesy letter of renewal.  This mail out is not a requirement.  It is the permit holder's responsibility to comply with renewal regulations.

Can someone else pick up my gun permits for me?

A

No.  The applicant must appear in person and provide photo identification at the time the permit is issued.  If the permit is for a carry concealed weapon, the applicant must sign the permit at the time of issuance.

How many gun permits can I apply for at one time?

A

You may apply for up to 6 gun permits at one time and up to 12 per calendar year.

Is the handgun permit renewable?

A

No.  Once they expire you must reapply.

What do I do if I lose my carry concealed weapon permit?

A

You must immediately report the loss to the Sheriff's Office and sign an affidavit as to the loss.  The information will be sent to the SBI and another permit will be issued to you.  Do not carry a weapon concealed without your permit.

Where can I find a listing of other states that accept the North Carolina Carry Concealed Permit when I am traveling?

The Sheriff’’s Office gives out the current listing of states at the gun permit counter or you may find the same information at the North Carolina Department of Justice.

NO, but you are required to tell the officer that you are in possession of a weapon and that you have a valid permit.

How do I obtain arrest reports for a person?

A

You may visit the Clerk of Superior Court's Office located in the Forsyth County Hall of Justice, 200 North Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC. The cost of the certified record check is $10.00. You will need the person's full name (maiden name and so forth) and the person's date of birth.
