Search Tips and Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble using the Tax Bill Online Service, or if you want to learn more effective ways to search, click on the links below.

Please take time to read and follow the instructions given on this page. Most data retrieval failures are a simple matter of incorrect source data or a lack of understanding of database search principles.

Search Tips

Basic Principles of Data Searches
Search by BlockLot/Account Number
Search by Billing Year/Receipt
Search by Owner Name
Search by Property Address
Search by PIN

Basic principles of data searches:
If you are unsure of any of the information you are using to search by, don't enter it. Entering fewer items of information will more likely return results.
For example, suppose you are looking for property on Miller St. But you are unsure of the property address number. Enter only Miller St, then select from the list. Even if you think you know the exact address, if your inital search does not find a match, reduce the information entered.

The same is true for Tax block lot searches. Enter only the first few digits of the block number unless you are sure of the full blocklot.

Also, you may search for a street name that could be spelled multiple ways or with or without spaces. Try the search with alternative spellings and configurations.
For example, suppose you are looking for Park Lawn Dr. It could be listed in the Tax Database as Parklawn or Park Lawn. Or it could even be entered differently for different tax records. Try several options before giving up the search.Return to top

Search by BlockLot/Account Number:
The correct format for a tax block: the first four positions are numbers (with leading zeros, if necessary), the fifth position is either blank or a letter.

The correct format for a tax lot: the first three positions are numbers ((with leading zeros, if necessary), the fourth position is either blank or a letter.

For example, tax block 136, lot 23 would be entered as 0136 023. Tax block 4404D, lot 2E would be entered as 4404D002E.

NOTE: If you try a search and do not find a match, try entering only the block number, then choose from the resulting pick list.

Real Estate blocklots will begin with a number. Registered Motor Vehicle accounts will begin with a "V". Business Personal Property Accounts will begin with a "B". Individual Personal Property Accounts will begin with a "P". Return to top

Search by Billing Year/Receipt:
Enter both the 4-digit billing year and the 6-digit receipt number from the tax bill.Return to top

Search by Owner Name:
You may search by the first Owner or second Owner listed on a tax record. If you are not sure if an Owner is listed 1st or 2nd, use both methods to search. Enter Owner's Last and First name AND/OR enter the Company name. Do not use any punctuation such as commas or periods. Return to top

Search by Property Address:
When searching by property address, make sure that you don't enter the street type in the same field as the street name. Enter the street type (such as RD, AVE) in the TYPE Field.

If you do not find a match using the exact property address, enter only the street name, then choose from the resulting pick list. The Tax Office uses the US Postal Service abbreviations for street types.Return to top

Search by PIN:
The current PIN is a 10-digit number derived from the x and y coordinates of the center of the parcel. This identifer will become more important in the future as the Tax Office converts the tax record identifier to a geographically-related identifer.Return to top
