Synopsis and Discussion

AQI readings are hovering in the mid Code Green range to round out the workweek. A trough building over the Eastern US will pull smoke from wildfires in central Canada into our area over the next few days. There are some details that complicate the forecast, including a backdoor cold front on Sunday and a potential secondary boundary passing through in backdoor fashion on Monday. Additionally, surface high pressure will be intensifying over the Ohio Valley which will promote broad sinking motion. Smoke is expected to arrive in the Triad around midday tomorrow and largely remain in place through Monday. There will be periods of higher and lower concentrations throughout the next few days but currently, daily fine particle averages are expected to hover in the middle Code Yellow range for the balance of the forecast period. Ozone readings in the smoky source region have been elevated which indicates abundant ozone precursors within the upstream air mass. With plenty of sunshine on Sunday and Monday and some drier air arriving, ozone is expected to increase into the mid Code Yellow range as well. Adjustments to the forecast either upward or downward may be necessary over the weekend as the finer details become more clear. (Perrotte)
